A Century of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Two Old Maine Surnames

These Titcomb and Merrill birth, marriage and death records were copied more than 50 years ago from three family Bibles and are a treasure trove for family researchers.

The records given here cover more than 100 years and come from family Bibles which were owned by Mrs. Howard Chessman Titcomb of Falmouth Foreside, Maine, in the 1950s. The original owners of each family Bible are identified with that set of records.

Capt. Samuel Titcomb’s Bible Records

This Bible containing records of value to genealogists belonged to Capt. Samuel Titcomb (1795-1854) of Falmouth, Maine.

Samuel Titcomb and Elizabeth Thomson married Jan. 19, 1819 in Falmouth. Samuel Titcomb was born Oct. 18, 1795. Elizabeth Thomson was born Oct. 14, 1800. Their children were: Elbridge Titcomb, born March 4, 1821; Olive Thomson Titcomb, born March 17, 1826; Samuel Chessman Titcomb, born March 18, 1828; Holmes Boardman Titcomb, born March 29, 1835.

Deaths: Samuel Titcomb died in Havana, Cuba of yellow fever, Oct. 12, 1854; Samuel Chessman Titcomb sailed for Harve (LeHavre) Aug. 25, 1854 and his ship was never heard from; Olive Titcomb Pote died in January of 1861; Holmes Boardman Titcomb died in Princeton, Illinois (no date given); Elbridge Titcomb died Jan. 23, 1883.

Elbridge Titcomb’s Bible Records

These records are from the Bible of Elbridge Titcomb, who was born in 1821 at Falmouth, Maine.

Marriages: Elbridge Titcomb and Asenath Merrill, Nov. 3, 1846; George D. Sargent and Olive F. Titcomb, Feb. 29, 1872; Ernest W. Titcomb and Maude E. Seabury, Sept. 21, 1892; Howard C. Titcomb and Lorena Stubbs, Jan. 19, 1898.

Births: Olive Frances Titcomb, March 1, 1854; Ernest Weston Titcomb, July 19, 1859; Howard Chessman Titcomb, July 6, 1866.

Col. Giles Merrill’s Bible Records

Giles Merrill, owner of this Bible, was born in Falmouth, Maine in 1788. Sarah Bucknam, whom Giles wed as his second wife on Oct. 7, 1823, was the daughter of John and Elmira (Knight) Bucknam of Falmouth, Maine.

Merrill, Feb. 24, 1836; Alexander P. Merrill, Feb. 15, 1839.

Deaths: Giles Merrill(Sr.), July 7, 1849; Asenath Merrill (first wife of Giles), Oct., 1822; George P. Merrill, Sept. 28, 1850; Charity N. Merrill, June 24, 1858; Henry A. Merrill, Dec.12, 1854; John B. Merrill, Jan. 25, 1853.

Gilbert M. Titcomb Sr. of Limestone, Maine, copied the family records from the three Bibles then owned by Mrs. Howard C. Titcomb and made them available to the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, which printed them in Vol. CX (April, 1956). Gilbert was the great-grandson of Capt. Samuel Titcomb and Col. Giles Merrill and a grandson of Elbridge Titcomb.
