These Nebraska Death Records Can Be Hard to Find, But They're There
Family historians looking for Cass County obituaries and other information may find this collection of constantly updated Nebraska cemetery records helpful.
Although Cass County does not have death/cemetery information as thorough or easy to use as nearby Douglas County and Omaha's newspaper death index, there is information available that can help. Four helpful sources are:
Index to the Cass County Burials Database
- Started many years ago by M. A. Carmichael and still being updated, this list now contains the names of over 26,000 persons buried in 48 Cass County cemeteries. The names are arranged in sections in surname alphabetical order (e.g. Aa-Ak, Al-Al, Am-An, etc.). Although a comprehensive list, it has two major faults: it only gives birth years (sometimes) and death years (no months and days); and, it does not give the name of the cemetery where the individual is buried. Also, the researcher needs to use the Key to decipher what various symbols mean.
Complete Index of Burials in Louisville’s Glendale Cemetery
- This is a rather large cemetery and its index was recently completed by Theresa Hand Vlasnik, the cemetery’s secretary. It has a bevy of information including: complete name; maiden name; date of birth and death (mostly complete dates); place of birth and death; age; and, usually parents’ names. Arranged alphabetically in two sections (A-L, M-Z).
Early Burials in Plattsmouth’s Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery
- Gene Wheeler created this index based on over one thousand records from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, now both defunct. Entries include: last, first and middle name; maiden name; date of birth (few are actually noted); date of death (usually complete date); age; lot and section number; comments (usually causes of death, but some include birthplace, and nearest relative); and, burial date (complete date). This index includes many of Cass County’s earliest pioneers and settlers.
USGen Web Tombstone Transcription Project
- This site includes: St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Manley; Eagle Cemetery in Eagle; Otterbein Cemetery near Nehawka; Oakwood Cemetery in Weeping Water; Greenwood Memorial Cemetery in Greenwood; Sheffer Pioneer Cemetery near Greenwood; and Riverview Cemetery in Louisville. All of these indexes only contain birth dates and death dates (about 50% are complete dates) and tombstone readings where applicable. The information appears to have been listed as the cemeteries were walked so there is no formal organization and the reader must look through the complete listings to find a name.
