Canadian missionaries working in the Canadian-United States border region often baptized Irish Catholics in New York and Vermont. Here are some of those records.

These records contain helpful genealogical data for the family researcher looking for information on Vermont and New York Irish Catholic ancestors. There is an introductory article about these Quebec parish records, plus part one, which gives baptisms for 1838 and 1839.

Irish Surname Spellings

Researchers and members of Irish families will find some of the surname spellings strange. Keep in mind that these records were recorded by French speaking missionaries who went more by how the name sounded to their untrained ear for English than to how such a name would be written. Their spellings are usually close enough that the real spelling and pronunciation of the Irish surname is fairly obvious.
